every native binary underneath answers --version and the one command a user actually types did not. found by installing the tarball into a prefix where every compiler on PATH was replaced by a shim that logs its own name and exits 127. the verb asks the BINARY rather than carrying a version string, so the script cannot report a version the installed core does not have.
